Monterey, California – Bike Path

We booked a trip to Marina Dunes RV Resort to celebrate the Feast of Booths. This Biblical holiday was traditionally celebrated by building temporary shelters in which to live for the week. This is to commemorate the Israelites wandering in the desert for 40 years living in tents. Our adaptation was to go glamping in our travel trailer.

The Monterey Peninsula is a special place for us because it is where my husband proposed and where we had our wedding reception. We also stayed here for a little while during our Camp Fire displacement (when we lived in our RV full-time as our sole residence). We like to visit the area every year or so. On this trip, we also met up with several extended family members for a mini impromptu family reunion. We arrived a day early.

On our first morning we ambitiously attempted to ride our bikes from Marina Dunes RV Resort to First Awakenings restaurant.

As you can see from the map above it was 13 miles with a “steep hill” and would take an estimated 1 hr 4 min.

It took us 2 hrs and 20 minutes in actual real-life time. Keep in mind that we don’t have fancy e-bikes like Dan and Betty over at Chambers on the Road. I think they would Love this bike path! Anyways, my map didn’t show all the hills! And the words “steep hill” on Google maps implied one singular hill, not multiple steep hills! After some seriously intense willpower moments on my part and many frequent let-me-catch-my-breath breaks, we eventually arrived at our destination.

We ate a scrumptious breakfast and then my husband took an Uber back to the RV to get the truck and came to pick us and our bikes up at the restaurant. I felt simultaneously out of shape, old, and beaming with pride because “I made it”!

3 miles of mostly flat path after 10 miles of steep up and down hills

🚲 We hope you get to enjoy a bike ride with someone you love sometime soon! 💕

  1. I was excited to see this post about bike riding! And you are right – we would love this bike path! But only with our ebikes. Good for you for riding it the old fashioned way! We didn’t purchase ebikes until about 4 years ago, as we wanted the exercise one gets with a non-ebike. But, as you know, we do love our ebikes. It allows us to ride further. Thank you for the shout out. It seems like I should add this campground to my ebook ,since you can ride bikes from it straight to a trail. If you agree, I will credit you (and your blog) for it. Is that okay? How would you like me to word it? Thanks again, and I am mostly glad that you all had such a good time. Eating breakfast with a view of the ocean would top my list of favorite things, too!

    1. Of course! You’re welcome to add this campground to your ebook. It is a Thousand Trails campground, but it didn’t used to be. You can access the bike trail straight from the campground, but you do have to ride along some city streets for a bit to get there. You are very good at wording things so I trust your judgment!
The bike ride was quite an adventure! It turned out to be much more difficult than I had anticipated, but I am glad that we did it. 😊

      1. When you ride on the city streets, is there a bike lane or a sidewalk? And how long do you have to ride on City streets? Would a scared cat like me ride it? 🙂 Thanks for your help in adding this to the ebook!

      2. There is a bike lane for most of it… it’s about 2 miles from the RV resort to the bike path. There were two roundabouts that I was not a huge fan of. There was a bike diversion path around the roundabouts. I probably wouldn’t have done it without my husband leading us, but I felt fairly safe. I haven’t ridden a bike in quite a while so at first, I was a wee bit wobbly. I think by the end it wouldn’t of been a big deal. I just needed to get my bearings.
