“Teaching in Your Tiara: a homeschooling book for the rest of us” by Rebecca Frech

Book #9 for 2026

New vocabulary word: paragon – a person or thing that represents a perfect example of a particular quality or a model of ultimate excellence. It sets the gold standard for what a perfect version of something should look like.

These two quotes are before the first chapter:

“There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“Parents give up their rights when they drop their children off at public school.” – Melinda Harmon, Federal Judge, 1996

Here are a few of my favorite takeaways from the book:

“…remember that all things, including support, come through Christ who strengthens us. Your support network will come through Him and the friends He brings into your life. You will have the support you need – even if not in the way you expected… Your people are out there, you just need to ask God to lead them to you (or you to them) and then trust in His perfect timing.” page 49

“This is one of those truths in life: as our circumstances change, our friendships will change along with them… It happens, and it’s okay. Sometimes difficult, but okay.” page 49

“I’ve learned how to laugh in the midst of it all, and that occasional chaos doesn’t make me a failure. This is a marathon not a sprint. The results are measured at the end of it all.” page 105

“Keep in mind, while trying to juggle the education of multiple children, there’s no such thing as wrong or right. There is only what works and what doesn’t… You just have to be willing to keep trying, adapting, and tweaking until you figure out what’s best for all of the people who live in your household. P.S. That includes you, too.” page 110

Teaching children at home as an adventure. Whether you have one child or twenty, it’s an everyday juggling act, balancing the dual responsibilities of teacher and mom. It’s hard to be the teacher who wants them to learn and do things on their own and the mom who wants them to get straight A’s” page 111

“Just because teenagers look almost adult doesn’t mean that they’re not still kids. They need you to be their parents just as much now as in the toddler years. It’s only the challenges that have changed.” page 118

”Because they haven’t been raised in the school system, homeschool students bypass the distain for adults and dependence on peer approval that seems to define modern American kids. That means that they tend to be happier kids who are more comfortable with who they are.” page 148

This book was a fun, easy read with lots of great insight for homeschooling. The author has a candid, funny, and conversational writing style that I really enjoyed! Although I did not agree with everything the author said, I would definitely recommend it for anyone considering homeschooling their children.
