Book #14 for 2026
I had so much fun putting together our Pollyanna Book Club/Matinee this past summer. I wanted to do another book/movie combo for fall. I chose Greyfriars Bobby* by Eleanor Atkinson. We invited some friends to join us in reading the book before getting together to watch the movie Greyfriars Bobby (dvd)* (1961) rated G streaming on Disney+. There’s another movie version The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby (dvd)* (2005) rated PG streaming on Amazon Prime.
This was our 3rd family listen-aloud book for the 2026-2027 academic year. As we listened to the audio book on Audible, I took notes on foods and other plausible tie-ins for our movie/book club. I didn’t use all of the things from my list.
- Skye Terrier
- Scotland (Scottish flag, tartan/plaid decor, bagpipe music)
- Ye Old Greyfriars Dining-Rooms
- heather
- Smoked herring and roasted potatoes
- Scottish bannock
- “…. a tallow candle… fitted it into the neck of a beer bottle.” (pg 41)
- Psalm 23
- breakfast porridge
And then these things weren’t technically mentioned in the book, but they were better suited for our tastes.
- Scotch pies (and vegetarian version)
- Shortbread Cookies Shaped Like Scottie Dogs*
- Heather Tea*
- Bible verse to go with the story:
“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”— Hebrews 13:16

I used ChatGPT to create movie ticket bookmarks and Bible verse cards for each attendee.

I ordered plush puppies and Plaid Ribbon* on Amazon and made a crate of puppies for the attendees to adopt.

I decided to totally overdo the plaid. I pulled out everything plaid we owned! I partly wanted to showcase the enormous variety of plaids available and partly wanted to clash so we didn’t take ourselves too seriously and the kids/tweens/teens would have fun and feel a little bit silly. I also ordered a plaid table runner, a plaid scarf, and plaid napkins from Vinted. My Vinted Referral Link

I asked everyone to wear plaid too, so we could power-clash Scottish style!
My homeschool mama friends brought apples with cinnamon sugar and roasted veggies to add to our lunch.
While we ate lunch I had the kiddos/tweens/teens take turns choosing questions from my question box to answer. I made the list of questions forever ago. I can’t remember how/where I came up with them. I think it was when we were using Five in a Row Curriculum *.
We hope you get to enjoy a good book, or movie, or new food with someone you love sometime soon!
