Baseball Unit Study

An opportunity to go to a minor league baseball game presented itself and so I signed us up! I was really excited that this quintessential summer activity fit into our schedule this season. Before the game, we enjoyed these educational books and DVDs.

And… I totally forgot I snagged this one at a thrift store – so we’re reading it tonight 6/1/24)!

Our favorites were “Who Was Jackie Robinson?” and “The Sandlot”. “What Is the World Series?“ had more play by play baseball game info than we liked. “42” is an excellent film with horrible language and is appropriately rated PG-13. Chadwick Bozeman and Harrison Ford were both brilliant. The writing and directing was excellent. The language was very bad.

We made a day trip to see the minor league game and all of us enjoyed it immensely! The home team won! There were three out-of-the-park home run hits and two double plays by our home team. We got randomly assigned seats behind first base and had to watch out for foul balls flying into the stands. I packed vegetarian hot dogs for lunch.

The parking garage was kind of expensive ($17) and I hit the roof antenna on the 6’5” ceiling clearance sign. Oof 🤦🏻‍♀️ luckily the vehicle just barely fit under the support beams!

I was frazzled by the parking garage minor fiasco, forgot to apply sunscreen, and we all ended up a little pink by the time we left.

Overall, it was such a fun experience for us to share and a great way to kick off summer 2024!

☀️ What are you looking forward to this summer?

  1. Looks like a lot of fun! I remember going to a ball game once in…maybe 7th grade with a neighbor friend. Sounds like a fun way to kick off the summer! We’re looking forward to a couple camping trips and especially the big International Pathfinder Camporee in Wyoming in August.

  2. Sounds like a fun day! One summer when my son was growing up, I enrolled him in a 3 week summer program. I think it was named “Baseball, Baseball, Baseball.” It was the best! They read the sports page, figured batting averages, played baseball in the afternoon, and they even went on a tour of Bush Stadium. St. Louis is very much a baseball town. We are looking forward to our Michigan camping trip!

      1. He did! I put his twin brother in the “science” camp, and it was a bust. They made paper flowers. We can laugh about it now. 🙂 Have a great night!
