Black Swan Preserve – Hike

Hike #4 for 2025

Our oldest requested this hike for his 15th birthday. It was a bit belated. It was also pretty muddy. It had rained for several days and there was a quick break in the rain so we went for the hike. It started raining again as we were getting back to the car.

We hiked 3.8 miles there and back – it’s supposed to be a 2 mile loop but the lake was high and water covered the last part of the trail so we had to turn around and hike back the way we had hiked in. The temp was in the high 40’s and it was cloudy. The trail was well-marked, muddy, slippery, rocky, narrow at times and wet. We also had to look out for cow pies which were scattered along the trail quite frequently. It was a watch-your-footing-carefully situation. We ate some miner’s lettuce. We avoided the poison oak. We saw Canada Geese and an unidentified bird of prey.

We were pretty tired afterwards. We really had to pay attention to each step and couldn’t just leisurely walk around without thinking about each placement of each foot.

We hope you are able to go for a hike with your family sometime soon!
