Wild Blackberries

Imagine our delight upon discovering ripe wild blackberries while we were visiting Mount Shasta City, CA. What a wonderful unexpected surprise! I love picking fresh fruit, and it’s been awhile since we’ve had the opportunity.

We ate a lot of blackberries, and we put about a cup and a half in a bag. By the time we got back to the campsite, the berries in the bag were kind of smooshed, so we decided to make them into jam.

I usually make jam with berries, fresh squeezed lemon juice and cane sugar, but we were camping and I hadn’t planned on making jam so I used what we had on hand (bottled OJ and maple syrup) to substitute

This camping jam was one of the highlights of our trip. We had so much fun gathering blackberries together. Despite the substituted ingredients, the jam turned out really delicious!

  1. I love blackberries, but they do tend to get mushy fast! Blackberry jam sounds delicious. I love it on sourdough toast! I’ve never made jam. Maybe someday I will. What a fun experience!

  2. What a great way to use smooshed blackberries and make it into jam!!I’d be so excited too to find wild blackberries. Hope you didn’t get many scratches while picking them…the thorns on those bushes are fierce.
BTW, maybe it’s my computer, but I don’t see your pictures in the middle of the post. Some are visible and nothing else except for the text. It’s for this one and the hot air balloon one.
