When we arrived back at Ken Patrick Visitor Center we ate a picnic lunch in the Jeep and then walked out to Drakes beach to see the bull elephant seals up close!

The bulls were sunbathing in the afternoon and didn’t move much. Rangers were putting little orange flags a safe distance around them to keep tourists from getting too close. I was surprised at how close the little orange flags were to the giant 4400-6000 pound animals! We were so close to them!

The kiddos also earned Junior Ranger patches.
We spent some time just walking on the beach, looking for sand dollars, and enjoying the salty air.

📷 Have you seen wild animals up close in their natural habitat? Which ones were your favorite?
So cool! It’s been a couple years since I’ve been that close to seals. I think since before I had children. I’m glad you guys got the experience and could enjoy the coast!

I don’t remember ever seeing elephant seals before. I’d just seen sea lions on Pier 39 in SF and harbor seals in Monterey and Crescent City. The bull elephant seals were huge!
