Summer Reading Program at the Library

Happy summer break everyone! If you don’t get a “break”, happy summer just the same!

Some of you may already know that I’m kinda obsessed with children’s literature. Books are a huge part of our homeschool. Right now, I have 2 Costco bins of books in bay 2A, an amazon box of books on the floor by the couch, a stack of books on the couch and 2 overhead cabinets with semi-neatly arranged books. Not to mention, that I just ordered 3 more books from amazon that are en route. Yikes!

Needless to say, we look forward to the library summer reading program every year. It’s easy and free to sign up. All you have to do, is visit your local library and ask! Once you sign up, you can earn cool prizes and incentives for reading books. We don’t usually use incentives for reading books, so the library summer reading program is extra fun for us! Many libraries also have fun events scheduled to celebrate summer reading. Some libraries have programs for adults too. I encourage you all to check it out!

*If I could do it all over again… I would totally be a librarian. One of my wishlist items is a Little Free Library. If I had one, then I could be a librarian right now!

I gotta show you these cool reading highlighter bookmarks I found at the Dollar Tree this week. They are perfect for encouraging summer reading.

You use the bookmark to highlight he words you are reading, and keep your eyes from getting distracted by all the other words on the page. Neato!

My friend, C.C. from Montana got us this perfect picture book after the Camp Fire. I highly recommend it. It’s about a fire that destroyed many homes in Oakland, CA.

This week, we visited the closest library, signed up for the summer reading program, checked out some great books, and bought a few books at the library book store to boot! Each kiddo got a goodie bag with a record sheet, a poster to color, a bookmark, a sticker, and a doorknob sign (my fave).

📚 What are you reading this summer?

Update: my good friend L.R. just gave us a great tip about the Barnes and Noble Kids summer reading program! Check it out for more summer reading fun.

  1. Awesome ! We’re big time book lovers too! In fact we just found the tiniest little library by the state park we are in and the kids picked up a bunch and I picked up water for elephants ! They have been reading by for about an hour now ! Love it ! We do miss having ALL our books and I’ve never had my dream fulfilled of having my own library room but it’s all good ! Our possessions are about 75% books haha
