First Day of Homeschool 2026

Ready or not, happy first day of homeschool friends! I’ve got kiddos in grades 7, 9, and 11 this year. My daughter’s birthday is in August, so we always start school after we celebrate her birthday. I kept waiting and waiting for back-to-school motivation to strike me this summer and it never did. A new friend suggested that I might be suffering from burnout. I hadn’t considered that before she made the comment but she seemed to have totally nailed it. C’est la vie! Sometimes we have to do things whether we feel like it or not.

To start off the academic year I prepped a tablescape of small back-to-homeschool surprises after everyone went to bed.

First thing in the morning, I baked some prepackaged cinnamon rolls for breakfast dessert.

At 9:00 AM we gathered at the dining room table to do daily check in, Bible, and art together. We’re studying the book of James, and the artist Raphael. We’re also using a Charlotte Mason Scripture Memory system this year. I was delighted to find a wooden box on Amazon that fits 3 x 5 cards and looks like a library card catalog drawer!

All other subjects are grade specific this year. My oldest is doing dual enrollment at community college per his request (this semester he’s taking MATH 126, ENG 101, and AUTO 101/111. We’re using teaching textbooks (math), The Mystery of History (history), Evan-Moor (spelling), Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) (language arts), The Good and the Beautiful (science/language arts/cursive), Simply Charlotte Mason (art history), Fully Surrendered (Bible), SimplyPiano/SimplyGuitar/SimplyDraw (music & art) and we rely heavily on living books & field trips to further curate our learning lifestyle.

  2. Congratulations on another school year! You are such a great example to your children. You didn’t “feel it” for school but you have to do what you have to do. That is a good lesson your children see you doing. I do hope some excitement returns to you as you get going this school year. You got this!
