Library Book Sale – Christmas School Prep

The last day of the library book sale was “Bag Day” at $5/bag of books. It was surprisingly well organized by age and by theme, and I loaded up on Christmas picture books for our annual Book Advent. You can read that post here. It was ridiculously easy to flip through all the bins of Christmas picture books to snag up all the ones I’ve been wanting, or looked good.

I’m super excited to sort, organize, and wrap these up for our December read alouds. My kiddos are 10, 12, and 14 this year. We still read aloud as a family and we still read picture books.

Here’s an except from “Jim Trelease‘s Read Aloud Handbook Eighth Edition”:

“At what age do you stop reading aloud picture books? In a word – never. There is often a misunderstanding that picture books are only for young children. It’s important to remember that a picture book is a format. It’s not always indicative of listening or reading ability. Although I understand the impatience to get on with the business of growing up, I wince whenever I hear that question. A good story is a good story, whether it has pictures or not. The key is reading aloud picture books that engage the listener and continue to develop an appreciation of literature and the value of reading.”

– from Jim Trelease’s Read Aloud Handbook Eighth Edition pg. 58

May your holiday season be filled with Joy & Peace & Great Books this year my friends!

P.S. My apologies for getting too far ahead with Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving! 🍁 🍂

    1. Your comment got cut off somehow – but my fave Christmas picture book is “The Christmas Knight” by Jane Louise Curry and “Antonella and Her Santa Claus” by Barbara Augustin and “The Christmas Crocodile” by Bonny Becker.
I haven’t read most of the ones I found at the library sale – but I’m looking forward to the ones that are set in Alaska and “Yoon and the Christmas Mitten” looks like an interesting cross-cultural story, the retelling of the Three Bears with a Christmas twist looks fun too!

  1. I love books sales! And you gave me a great idea. We have a little girl next door who is in kindergarten. For some reason, she has really taken to us – when we are home. So…from this post, I plan to purchase “The Christmas Crocodile” and send it to her as an early Christmas gift. Before we left, we gave her “If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Don’t!” and “There’s an Alligator Under My Bed.” Since we are in Big Cypress – where there are tons of alligators (and crocodiles nearby), we thought these would remind her of us.” I think I’ll also purchase “The Christmas Crocodile” for our niece and nephew, too. I’m excited for the idea! Thank you!

  2. I haven’t heard of this idea before and I think it is great! I really enjoy reading. Around this time I start looking for holiday/Christmas books at the library and I put them on hold. Hallmark Christmas movies and Christmas book-readings starts day after Thanksgiving weekend for me. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your neat idea.

    1. Our Christmas book collection has grown quite massive in just a few years of doing a book advent. My very practically minded child lamented that we would have to read 3-4 per day to read them all in December. But that’s okay with me! 😁

      1. I agree – that is okay with me. Are you like me – sometimes I get to reading and so involved in the book that I forget to make dinner! That is when Kevin “cooks” meaning, out to eat. HAHA
