Wednesday Tea and Poetry

For Spring Semester 2024, I made a few changes to our homeschool routine. One of the biggest changes was adding Wednesday tea and poetry. I took out some workbook time to fit it in. Another change was switching between 3 different unit studies, instead of sticking with one until it was completed, like we did with space science last semester. I’m afraid I get bored easily, and it’s easier to be consistent with doing our unit study if it’s a different topic every day.

Here’s our updated schedule. My first version of our schedule, the one we used last semester, was handwritten and blocked on colored sticky notes. I feel like this new typed up version is just so much sleeker and nicer to look at. I don’t use set times for our schedule, so it’s not a true schedule, but instead we have a daily rhythm.

For tea and poetry on Wednesdays we enjoy a cup of tea and a snack while we do something poetry related. We used to have fun little tea parties while living in our RV full time. Here’s that throw back post if you’re interested:

Nowadays we have real herbal tea in real tea cups.

Here are our favorite flavors of tea:

Me – Tazo Calm Chamomile Herbal Tea

S and K – Taylor’s Rose Lemonade

B – The Republic of Tea Blueberry Hibiscus

My husband – Bigelow Tea Perfectly Mint Black Tea, Caffeinated (he doesn’t usually join us for tea and poetry but I wanted to share his favorite tea anyway)

For the poetry portion of tea and poetry, I love these poetry books by Usborne:

Write Your Own Poems

I’ve written a couple of posts about what I’ve found and like for homeschooling poetry and you can read those if you’re interested:

Poetry Books For Kids

Our current poetry book is A Poem for Every Day of the Year, which is a nice anthology featuring a variety of poems and poets. It’s a UK publication and we’ve learned some interesting UK historical facts from reading it. It’s more appropriate for older students, as many of the poems are rather morose, and deal with themes of death or war.

My favorite anthologies of poetry for kids are Sing a Song of Seasons and One Minute till Bedtime: 60-Second Poems to Send You off to Sleep.

Some other great books of poems are The Lost Words and any books by Jack Prelutsky.

Until next time, we hope this post inspires you to relax and enjoy a cup of tea or a book of poetry!
