Oregon Zoo – Portland, OR

So, to be perfectly frank, zoos are not my favorite venue. As a general rule, I dislike seeing animals in cages. It makes me feel sad, it always has, ever since I was a little girl.

That being said, zoos have a very unique benefit. The really wonderful thing about zoos is their multigenerational, multi physical ability appeal. The walkways are usually wide, flat, paved and with multiple benches for resting and restrooms for pit stops. Zoos are great for babies, strollers, kids, teens, wheelchairs and adults of all ages and abilities! Zoos are mostly outdoors, making them ideal for kids with lots of energy and adults who don’t like being cooped up indoors or tire easily in museums. I’m hard pressed to find another venue with such wide appeal as a zoo. And that my friends, is how we ended up at the Oregon Zoo for a mini family reunion with my uncle WB & aunt PB, my cousin KW & her husband KW & their new baby LW, my cousin TB, and my other cousin JB! It was wonderful to visit with family and as far as zoos go, the Oregon Zoo in Portland is a very nice one. This was an “educational” stop on our itinerary.

I really didn’t take vey many photos, because they never turn out through glass and fencing, but here’s a few to prove we were there!

At about the middle of our zoo outing, a bird pooped on my shoulder! I initially thought it had started raining. But then when I looked at my shirt there was a white splatter! My cousin TB said it was supposed to be good luck. Hmmm… I dunno. Maybe good luck for her that it landed on me instead! Luckily my cousin KW had baby wipes with her so it was an easy clean up. Baby wipes are so handy!

💩 Comment poll question: Have you ever been “lucky” enough to have bird poop land on you?

There were also sea otters, river otters, elephants, a mountain lion, a beaver, and a family of orangutans. The baby orangutan was so cute but photos through glass just rarely turn out. I would visit here again just to see that adorable baby orangutan.

We had a wonderful time visiting with family and meeting new additions to our extended family. The kiddos were excited to meet their new 2nd cousin. LW is just the cutest, sweetest, most adorable baby ever!

  1. I understand your opinion about zoos, but there are some benefits of having zoos. One is education – to increase awareness of the importance of habitat preservation among other things. Also, some zoos have helped endangered species to increase their numbers. I don’t disagree with your opinion. I just think there are both positives and negatives – like many things in life. And yes, I did have a bird poop on me – at least once that I remember.

    1. Yes, I understand that line of thought regarding zoos. Personally, I have a hard time getting past the wild animals in cages, but I know that the vast majority of people would agree with the educational and conservation benefits of zoos.
Glad to know there is someone else as “lucky” as me to be in the wrong place at the wrong time for a bird dropping drop!
I hope your week is off to a great start! 😊
