Homeschool Curricula for 2023-2024

1st day of homeschool 2023

I’m optimistically hopeful that our 2023-2024 homeschool year will be easier than 2022-2023 or 2021-2022 since we are not planning on moving! Of course, we can’t know what the future holds, but my fingers are crossed that we’ll stay put in NV for a while… (please at least for one entire homeschool year). I’m hoping that we settle into a nice homeschool routine with inevitable random bumps and hiccups along the way. Regardless, we’ll be sure to keep going on lots of field trips and reading lots of good books!

Here’s a look at some of the curricula we’re planning on using this homeschool year for grades 4, 6, and 8. If you’re not interested in that, scroll down to the bottom of the post and see if you can help me out with some book suggestions for my 8th grader… Thanks!

I’d love a little help on this part

Our 8th grader is using level 7 of The Good and the Beautiful.

His assigned reading challenge outlined in the textbook is: “Heidi” by Johanna Spyri, “Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin” by Marguerite Henry, a biography, 3 historical fiction books, 2 fiction books, and a nonfiction book.

So far I’m thinking:
“I Am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai for biography
“Johnny Tremain” by Esther Forbes and “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan for historical fiction
“The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey and “Make Your Bed“ by Admiral William H. McRovin for the one nonfiction

Do you have any ideas or suggestions for the one remaining historical fiction or the 2 fiction books for our 8th grader?

Wishing you a Homeschooling year full of wonder!

  1. Eeks! When it gets to 8th grade is where I started having difficulties so I can’t help you there. I’m just enjoying reading about these things my grandkids are doing. While I am also admiring the exhausting tasks you perform as a teacher, mother, cook, cleaner, wife and all the many other aprons you wear daily and still looking sharp!!

  2. I’m curious about More than Words and Simply Piano…do you have a piano or do they just use the app?

What kind of art are you interested in? We’ve really enjoyed the “Let’s Make Art” tutorials on YouTube, usually sticking to the ones for kids although Ari and I have done several of the regular ones as well. They are primarily watercolors but we bought some relatively inexpensive watercolors from Amazon and then just follow along with the videos.

Ideas for your 8th grader… Joseph: A Story by Terri Hivash, Swiss Family Robinson, Secret Church by Vernon, and Sign of the Chrysanthemum. Anyway, not sure if he would like any of those but I enjoyed all of them around his age.

    1. Thank you for the awesome art and book recommendations! I had “Swiss Family Robinson” in the back of my head. The children love the old Disney movie and I’m sure he’d love the book too.

Simply piano is used with our iPad and our keyboard.

I just threw out our old “more than words” workbook last week… But you can certainly look at the level two workbooks next time we see you. I really like that level one included hymn and art studies. It is not a rigorous program. But my goal isn’t deep theological discussions, rather just spending time together in God’s Word, in His presence. So it’s definitely “too easy” for our age groups but I like it that way! 😊
