Birds of the Month: May – Quail, June – Mockingbird, July – Swallow

Wow, I’ve really run out of steam on this “bird drawing of the month project”! But, I’ve not given it up. We just crammed 3 bird drawings in this week. 🤷🏻‍♀️

May – Quail

We decided to draw quail because we see a few quail families frequently in our yard. The chicks are super adorable!

My children deviated from the video tutorial when the artist began shading with pencil. They used colored pencils to make more accurately colored pictures instead.

June – Mockingbird

After recently observing a pair of male mockingbirds duel in the backyard, we decided to draw mockingbirds. They are not my favorite bird, as I find their calls can be extremely annoying. This is especially true early in the morning when I am trying to sleep in.

July – Swallow

Our current read-aloud is “Swallows and Amazons” by Arthur Ransome. The book isn’t about swallows, but the boat in the book is named swallow. And one of the characters makes a flag for the boat with a swallow on it. We tried a new style of art lesson and drew vintage tattoo style swallows.

  1. Until today I didn’t know that there are many species of quail. We have Gambel’s quail in Arizona. Yours are California quail. Isn’t it fun to watch them walk one behind the other.

    1. Oof 😅 this bird drawing project turned out to be more work than it looked like on my planner last August! 😂
I thought, surely drawing one bird per month will be easy for us to accomplish. —- surely—-
Then I crammed these 3 in the last week of July! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
