My mom and I are doing a block of the month together. We’re making a Farm Girl Vintage Sampler quilt. The pattern is by Lori Holt.
We had done this years ago, before the fire, I don’t know how many blocks we had completed.
Many.
I had even custom designed my own original pattern of a roster to coordinate. It was cool.
Anyways, it all burnt up in the Paradise Camp Fire. And for a long, long time, I haven’t felt like starting it over again.
Nothing like a little competitive peer pressure to get one in the mood. My mom said if I didn’t want to make it she was going to make it without me. Thanks mom.
I figured since we do less school in the summer, June 2025 would be a good time to re-start the project. I let my mom choose the first block. She picked the “Scrappy Strawberry Block” on page 59.
For the next block (July 2025) I chose “Old Glory” on page 49.
In August my mom chose “Pie Cherries” on page 54…
… I finally finished mine on January 24, 2026…
… just 6 months late! 🤦🏻♀️
I let my daughter choose the next block that my mom and I would work on and she chose “Mama Hen” on page 42 for February 2026.

At times I find quilting, very relaxing, but this last cherry block was driving me nuts! I could not seem to figure out how to get the mirror image to turn out for the stems. I had to redo it four times. It was not fun.

It’s wonderful that you are taking up this challenge with your mom! You have a lot of crafty skills…it seems to run in the family.
That must’ve been so difficult to undergo all that loss in the fire. You and your family are amazing and resilient to have overcome that life-altering event.

My mom would have the whole Quilt finished in about two weeks! Doing it with me is a giant handicap! We were doing it when our family had moved to North Carolina and my parents were in California, just for something fun to do together across the miles… It’ll be fun to see how different they turn out even though we’re using the same pattern.

We lived in NC for 10 months in 2016.

My husband had gotten a job out there. I didn’t really like it, so we ended up moving back to California and he worked remotely.

I knew your mom does quilting but I didn’t remember that you do it as well. Great job! What a fun project to do together. Your picture of the first block is very cute and I don’t think you need to redo it. 🙂 Please keep posting pictures of your work. I love quilting!!!
