Holy Hygge (HYOO-guh)

Book #6 for 2025

Holy Hygge (HYOO-guh): Creating a Place for People to Gather and the Gospel to Grow by Jaime Erickson

I really enjoyed this book. It was difficult to select which excerpts to share with you. I highlighted A Lot of sentences and paragraphs. I’m choosing only 2 quotes to share. The first is a definition of hyyge (hyoo-guh):

“The term stems from a 16th century Norwegian word hugga, which means to comfort, console, or encourage. It is loosely connected to our English word hug.” pg. 14

Hygge simple but sophisticated, warm and inviting, homemade and rustic. Hygge is the opposite of hustle… It takes things slow and envelopes you in sanctuary.” pg. 15

The second quote is this:

“You don’t have to have all the answers. People need you to show up before your advice shows up. Sometimes standing in quiet companionship can speak the language of love in powerful volumes. But should you want clear direction for how you can comfort someone in their deepest pain, just think back to the ways that God held your story with care, and then do the same for the stories of others. Don’t worry about saying or doing everything perfectly. Just point to the Comforter, remembering that a home centered on God can provide comfort inside even when outside the world is crumbling” (pg. 141)

If this topic is interesting to you, I highly recommend this book!

What are you reading right now?

  1. I’m still in my urban fantasy phase, so I’m re-reading the Mercy Thompson series. (I’ll have a blog post about it soon.) Our church is also participating in The Bible Recap read-the-Bible-in-a-year plan. It has been such a blessing! This is the first such plan I’ve stuck with for more than a couple of months.
