Last year we started school by learning about John James Audubon through our own Unit Study. I had intended to start a Jane Goodall unit study in August, but my original plan didn’t quite pan out. Before we could start on Jane Goodall, I wanted to finish up our space science unit study by The Good and the Beautiful. Then when we were in the middle working on that, we took a few rabbit hole unit studies. We were finally ready for Jane Goodall at the start of the spring semester.
I found a free unit study about Jane Goodall from Book Shark. I’ve never tried book shark before so I thought I’d grab the freebie, and give it a go. The biography that coordinates with this unit study was okay. There wasn’t anything wrong with it, but it quite simple and wasn’t very rich. The subtitle, “a biography book for new readers” should’ve been my clue.

We really enjoyed listening to “My Life With the Chimpanzees” by Jane Goodall, narrated by Jane Goodall on Audible. It was So Good! We far preferred it to the book recommendation from Book Shark. That aside, the coordinating activities in the Book Shark unit study were very good and they went along just fine with our alternate chapter book.

We checked out some books from the library and we liked this picture book best. It includes some drawings by Jane Goodall when she was a child which was unique and very cool.

We ate bananas 🍌 (one of the chimpanzees in Gombe steals bananas from Jane’s camp) and cashews (a researcher said he’s tried eating termites like wild chimpanzees and they taste similar to cashews) for a themed snack.

I bought each of the kiddos a plush chimpanzee for Valentine’s Day. ❤️

I found this cool idea for an art lesson from Faber Castell: “Me…Jane” Art Lesson

We watched Growing Up Animal (episode 5) A Baby Chimp’s Story on Disney+
We had a great time learning more about chimpanzees and this groundbreaking woman of conservation and science.
I would learn so much if I was one of your kids!

I love how you teach! I want to be a student/kid! Thank you for sharing about the unit, Book Shark, and your recommendations! I LOVE JANE GOODALL–I wanted to be here, and Laura Ingalls Wilder, tee hee, when I was growing up. What a fun unit! Kudos, Mom, and to all the learners for their fantastic artwork!

I love the books you used and adding the chimpanzee stuffies that were a part of this study!! You do so well as a homeschooling mama.
