Arizona Unit Study

We’re planning an upcoming glamping road trip to Arizona! We will travel in 3 states, and our plans include visiting 2 National Parks and 3 State Parks, plus some other exciting stops to boot! Needless to say, we’re going to do a unit study to tie in with our adventure. I do so enjoy unit studies!

We started with these Night Explorer Junior Ranger workbooks we got last time we visited Death Valley National Park, 3 years ago. We had only completed one page in the workbooks. Better late than never! I’m sure we’ll have some great night sky viewing opportunities along our way to Arizona.

I scoured our bookshelves for relevant titles and found these.

Then I found this one at Goodwill, and I didn’t feel like redoing the photo. 😂

I requested Arizona Trail National Scenic Trail Junior Explorer handbooks from the Bureau of Land Management. These are really nice workbooks printed in full color on nice thick paper. The BLM employee included matching temporary tattoos too. I’m not usually a fan of temporary tattoos on children, but I’ll probably make an exception for the road trip.

After a lengthy online search, and reading lots and lots of reviews, I decided to use these as our chapter book read alouds. I welcome any other suggestions!

I checked out some pictures books from the library, and this was our favorite:

We’re planning to make the recipe for Arizona from this American Grub: Eats for Kids from All Fifty States cookbook (a thrift store find). I’d been wanting to try a version of Navajo fry bread for a while. We hope to find some more new foods to try during our travels!

For art, I found these kits from The Dollar Tree. We prepped the kits by cutting the yarn to the correct length and then packed them for the road trip.

🛣️ Wish us luck on our upcoming road trip. It’s going to be a lot of driving to fit into the constraints of my husband’s time off work!

  2. Neat books. I’ve always thought macrame was difficult to do. It is very pretty though. You and E are making wonderful family memories. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
