Winter Reading Challenge completed 2023-2024

Family/Kid Challenge: we read together (at least one child and one parent) 55 days and got ourselves a new family game as our prize. B found the game while we were on a TJ Maxx shopping expedition.

Teen/Adult Challenge

Be an Extreme Book Nerd ✅

Read a nonfiction book:

This was a really interesting book and a great Christmas history lesson in 14 chapters – we highly recommend it

Pick up an event calendar at your local library ✅

Read a book you can curl up with:

We enjoy the version on Audible – it’s an annual tradition in our house, we also like watching the movie based on the book

Read a book with a subtitle:

S and B read “Frogs…” independently and K read “Wild Weather…” independently

Perform an act of community service:

  • Donate books that no longer spark joy to the local library
  • Donate toys and clothes that no longer spark joy to the local charity thrift store
  • Deliver Christmas treats to the post office employees
  • Bake tree shaped gingerbread cookies for the crew cutting down dead and dangerous trees on our property
  • Donate wood from cut down trees to neighbors in need of fuel for the cold winter
  • Deliver Christmas treats to the nearest fire department
  • Make crafty cards for our elderly great aunt living in a care home facility
  • Donate excess loom knit hats to charity

Attend a book sale ✅

Attend a library program:

Check out a blind date with a book: for this bingo square I wrapped up 7 books and put a little clue on them. Each kiddo got to choose one from the set based on the clue.

Read a book with a noun in the title:

Couldn’t find this version on Audible so I read it aloud

Read a book by Bear Grylls – I swapped this for the book club in a bag (BCIB) category:

kiddos read these independently

Make a craft: We have made these easy mess-free beeswax candles an annual tradition: Christmas Beeswax Candle Making Kit

Read a book with a blue cover:

Borrowed this as an audiobook from the library’s app Libby – it’s a navy blue cover but the photo looks nearly black

Attend another library program:

Learn something new on YouTube:

Galileo Experiment on the Moon

Read a book with punctuation in the title:

Teen/Adult Challenge Prizes:

We bought ourselves some “new to us” used books:

And I got myself 2 new books on Amazon:

I found 3 really cute soup mugs at a thrift store. I love it when recipes are printed on ceramics.

We also went out for a treat at a local business for our blackout bingo card. I offered a choice between donuts, ice cream, or a chocolate shop. The kiddos chose donuts. I was so focused on thinking about the donuts, and not at all thinking about this blog, so I forgot to take a photo of them. They were delicious!

Although I think reading is its own reward, prizes are just fun sometimes! We mirrored the prizes offered for a blackout bingo card by the Idaho Falls public library fairly well I think.

We hope this post inspires you to visit your local library and check out a new book or two!
