Snow Horses Unit Study

I found a recommendation for this book from Read Aloud Revival. If you’re not familiar with Sarah Mackenzie and her work, you should check it out! I’m not a member of RAR so I don’t have access to all her materials, but I’m a big fan. Every time I visit the Read Aloud Revival website, I’m “this close” to purchasing a membership.

Here’s what we did for our unit study based on Snow Horses: A First Night Story.

Obviously, we read Snow Horses: A First Night Story. Then I did a library card catalog search for Micha Archer, so we could check out more of her collage artwork. It’s really cool!

We checked out Wonder Walkers.

After being inspired by Micha Archer’s artwork we made mixed media collage art to replicate some of the trees in Snow Horses: A First Night Story.

We used card stock, patterned scrapbook papers, paper doilies, glue sticks, red/blue/purple felt, and black & white photos of the kiddos (to put them in the story)

We also checked out Album of Horses by Marguerite Henry from the library to learn more about the specific type of horses featured in the story, Percheron. This is a lovely book about many different types of horses.

We already had Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening which coordinates perfectly (and was recommended by Read Aloud Revival). I had all 3 kiddos copy the poem and we’re working on memorizing it.

We scoured our bookshelves for other books about snow that would coordinate and we found these:

We made snowball cookies (aka Mexican wedding cakes, aka Russian tea cakes) for our Wednesday afternoon tea party.

Snowball Cookies

This mini unit study was a lovely way to start back to homeschool after our Christmas break! We were even lucky enough to get 10 inches of snow the next week!

Happy January friends! ❄️

  1. What an awesome unit study! I really like Patricia MacLachlan (I recommend Christmas Tapestry). Very creative artwork you all did! I totally hear you about RAR! I have almost joined so many times! I also love the wild horse photos you post! So beautiful and neat to think that wild horses still exist. I am also curious about your Wednesday afternoon tea party. That sounds like fun!

  2. Thanks April! It’s good to hear from you. I hope you’re all doing well! This semester I cut out some of our workbooks to make time for poetry and tea on Wednesday. One day I had the children copy “stopping by woods on a snowy evening”, another day we wrote an extra stanza to go on the end of an AA Milne poem. We also have Usborne poetry books that we used some last year but still have plenty to do in them.
