First Day of Homeschool 2023

In the past I’ve made Schultütes for the children filled with new school stationary supplies. This year my oldest needed more books/textbooks than crayons/markers, so I made large back-to-homeschool bags instead. Each paper grocery bag has a colorful printed label and contains new school books/workbooks, new socks and new unmentionables. My next post will focus on our curricula list if you’re interested in what we’re using.

this all has to be set out in the dead of night so it can be a surprise in the morning so you’ll have to forgive the photo lighting

I found the school bus shaped box at the Dollar Tree and filled it with new pencils and stickers to share (I think I might reuse that next year). Plus, I wanted to start the year off with new art supplies, so there’s a tote of fresh markers and crayons to share.

First Day of Homeschool Agenda:

  • Breakfast
  • Cat & chicken chores
  • Pray
  • Pass out new materials/supplies/workbooks/textbooks
  • Review daily routine
  • Organize new materials and find midway points
  • Green time (unstructured outdoor time)
  • Read the picture book: “What Do You Do with an Idea?” and make a coordinating craft project
Craft: spray paint Easter eggs white, attach golden card stock crown and pipe cleaner legs with hot glue, hot glue a small stone inside the bottom of the egg for weight so it sits upright
  • Color a border sheet and write a memory verse. I like to start each homeschool year with Luke 2:52. “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” This is one of the few Bible verses that tells us about Jesus’s childhood. Since Jesus is our example and we want to follow Him, we want to grow up how He grew up. From this verse, we remind ourselves, that it is important to find activities that help us to grow intellectually/mentally, physically, spiritually, and socially.

  • Teaching Textbooks math lesson
  • Green Time
  • Back-to-homeschool photoshoot
I cheated on the first day photos and did them ahead of time. It was overcast the day I took the photos and overcast makes the perfect lighting for outdoor photos.

Our first day was a soft start and my main goal was getting the children excited for (or at least not dreading) the upcoming homeschool year. I suppose 2 out of 3 isn’t too bad. 🤷🏻‍♀️ At any rate, we’ve officially started, so ready or not, all systems prepare for launch.

Here’s to a 2023-2024 homeschool year full of wonder!

  1. Love the school bus box. (I was wondering where you got it!) Love the surprise bags for the first day of home school. And I love the eggs wearing crowns. I kind of want to make them. 🙂 And of course, the pictures of your kids smiling.

      1. Yes, the reading challenge had some blank spaces 3 historical fiction, a biography, 2 fiction and 1 nonfiction. But they are “choose your own to fit the category”. TGATB book list is such a good resource! 😊
