I’ve been inspired by a “Weight Watches” advertisement that I saw while finishing off a box of “Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe-Joe’s”. Mmmm, so yummy!
The ad shows various men and women munching on goodies, while a new version of the children’s song “If You’re Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands” plays in the background. The song is really catchy and I have it stuck in my head every time I reach for something to eat. My favorite character is the mom who is mindlessly chewing on something in the front seat of her car with the kids going bonkers in the back seat. While she snacks, the lyrics say “If you’re stressed and you know it eat a snack” to the tune of the aforementioned children’s classic. The ad is super funny and cute and honest and sad all at the same time. How often do I feed my feelings with food instead of eating for the function of providing my body with the fuel it needs to function properly. A calorie is a unit of energy. Food is meant to energize the body. Food is not meant to medicate, cover-up, or subdue mental and/or emotional discomfort. I eat sugar when I feel tired, overwhelmed, stressed out, or like I “deserve a treat” for making through a rough day. These are not good reasons to eat, period. They are especially not good reasons to eat cookies, chocolate and ice cream.
My resolution for the New Year is to get back to my pre-baby weight, 130 lbs (I’m about 5 ft 6 in tall). My little bundle of joy is 7 1/2 months old and I’ve got a little over 11 lbs I’d like to be rid of. Because I’m still nursing baby “Blueberry” I won’t really go on a real diet. Because of my husband’s work schedule and my sleep deprivation I won’t really increase my exercise. Oh wow, look-y there, I’ve got two great excuses already! However, I will stop eating all this extra sugar. No cookies, no chocolate bars, no ice cream. “Bye-bye” Peppermint Joe-Joe’s… “Bye-bye” Salted Caramel Talenti Gelato…
I’ll do a weekly weight check at the end of each blog.
Jan. 1 weight check: 141.6 lbs
