Three More Blocks of the Month – Farm Girl Vintage

I know we already did a block this month, Mama Hen, but I was feeling kind of “blah and I needed a pick-me-up so I decided to do the next block early.

Homeschooling is a long-haul type of project and you don’t see a lot of results on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. I am confident that all of the hard work is going to pay off, but it’s a lot of effort and you don’t really see what’s happening in your kiddos’ brains. So, sometimes it’s nice to do a project start to finish. It gives me a sense of accomplishment to get something completed. And it’s fun to turn little scraps of fabric into a chicken or a tea kettle. It’s also old-fashioned and slow, which is a nice change of pace from all the digital stuff in the world.

Block of the Month – Farm Girl Vintage

My favorite fabric of this project so far… is the pink strawberries on the red background. I used it for the knob on my tea kettle.

my mom’s large kettle is very similar in color scheme to mine – and that was the color scheme in the example in the book

Next up, I chose “Simple Star” on page 61. I ended up making this one too because I had kind of a crummy week (on top of a pretty crummy month) and I felt like I needed another pick-me-up. I really wanted to use the back pocket from my ruined shorts and this was the only block in the book that had a square of fabric that was the right size to fit it. The pocket is still fully functional too.

My mom chose “Old Red Barn” on page 48 for the next block.

While I was initially checking out the pattern, my youngest son (age 11) came over and had a bunch of opinions and modifications and constraints that he wanted me to add to it. I took his suggestions. He wanted the roofs to be different colors from the walls of the barn, and he wanted the barn door to be only two colors instead of four and said that the barn door should be brown. I used my ruined shorts for the sky/background.

my mom usually takes all the selvage off fabric but she left some on the red fabric so I intentionally included it – I love selvage

Speaking of my love of selvage…

my mom made me this awesome tote bag!! – isn’t selvage cool 😎
my mom fussy-cut the windows so cute 🥰

So yeah, a lot of quilting therapy for me this February!

I chose the next block, “Baking Day” on page 13 for March.
