Mama Hen – Block of the Month – Farm Girl Vintage

I kind of wish this was a mama bear block instead of a mama hen block because that’s just how my life has been going lately. Nevertheless, I’m happy with how my block turned out. The blue wing is made from my ex-favorite pair of shorts that I ruined by tearing hole in the seat of them while visiting Gilroy Gardens, California a couple of summers ago. The hole is really very small but nonetheless rendered the shorts unwearable and unfixable. The fabric is 100% cotton so I figured I’d go really old-school and use ruined clothes in my quilt. I cut the shorts in half and mailed 1/2 to my mom so she could use it in her blocks too.

My mom made two sizes as usual

My mom chose the next block, “Kettle’s On” page 39.

And in completely unrelated news, I’m beyond excited about our upcoming travel plans for spring/summer/fall! We’ve got a tagalong work trip, glamping at a bucket list destination, an 8th grade graduation, and more! My husband and I spent a couple of days over Christmas break at the computer getting everything lined up and booked. Over the past six months, our family has been managing several external stressors, and planning these trips has given us something positive to focus on and prep for. Plus, we’ll get a few much-needed chances to step away and reset. I look forward to sharing our adventures with you!

  1. Great work on your quilt block. Yes, a cute little button for the eye would sure add a lot to it. I agree with you that when a person goes through tough times, planning something fun and excited is a great help to get through the hard stuff. I am so excited to read about your travels and adventures. Hang in there; one step at a time.
