DIY Summer Homeschool “Conference”

Last summer, I attended a few local homeschool mini-conferences and left each of them feeling underwhelmed, uninspired and like I’d wasted a big chunk of time. This summer, instead of scouring Facebook for local conferences and lamenting the travel cost to attend a large conference in California, I decided to read books instead. I felt like time spent reading would be time better spent. I also buckled down and calculated grades for my high school student and entered his grades and courses into a transcript.

My DIY summer homeschool “conference” included books and journals from varying authors with varying perspectives.

I planned an early summer brunch, invited my local homeschool mama buddies, and got some great ideas for my TBR list.

I scheduled a few low-key playdates with homeschool mama buddies too. My friend hosted a soap making day. I hosted a paint & sip using a tutorial on YouTube.

I hosted a Christian Vision Board crafting session.

We loved this tutorial on YouTube.

I snagged this magazine on a grocery run. I don’t know if it will help, but I thought it was worth a shot.

Instead of browsing the curriculum vendors at a conference, I went to the Goodwill Big Summer Blow Out Sale – all books were 50% off! I showed very little restraint on this shopping trip and ended up with a huge haul of homeschool goodies (& this is exactly why a have a clutter problem)!

Stationary – my daughter signed up for the *American Heritage Girls (AHG) pen pal program which starts in October, she’s excited to write letters to a new friend she’ll get matched with.

🩵 We hope this post gave you some useful ideas for creating your own DIY homeschool “conference” on a budget, or perhaps you can use the ideas to inspire a “conference” in whatever subject(s) interest you!

*American Heritage Girls (AHG) is a Christian scouting club that several of our local friends are involved with. This will be our first year trying it out.

  1. I like how you think and make things work for your best. You were able to focus on what you wanted and needed to learn and I know you got way more things from the Goodwill than if you had gone to a regular conference. I am sure you are an inspiration to many other homeschooling moms. Great job!

    1. Lol. If books were the only clutter in my house, that would be something!

That is so wonderful that you’ve had a penpal for so long! That’s really special, I doubt there are many people that could say the same.
