Week of Less #2 – 2025

Our 2nd “week of less“ started on the coattails of a severe flu. Those of us that were on the mend were still exhausted and feeling unwell. Somehow my husband managed to avoid getting sick this time around. Whatever vitamins he’s taking, I’m going to start taking. Our “week of less” was a week of convalescence.

Sunday:

We watched 2 episodes of LEGO Masters, my hubs and B went to the grocery store to pick up some food for everyone & Robitussin, I washed all of B’s bedclothes, we ate soup and bread from the store for dinner, we listened to 45 min of “Carry On, Mr. Bowditch“ by Jean Lee Latham and watched an episode of Drive Thru History that talked about St. Patrick.

Monday:

People woke up still feeling unwell. On the plus side, I used being ill for several days as a catalyst to quit coffee. We made refrigerator biscuits and tea. I washed several blankets and a throw pillow.

We watched another episode of LEGO Masters. I took out the trash for trash day. I made navy beans which are a key ingredient for my oldest son’s birthday meal on Thursday. We watched A Bug’s Life and an episode of Sugar Rush and an episode of Weird But True and an episode of Drive Thru History. Lots of TV today. We listened to a few chapters of “Beverly, Right Here” by Kate DiCamillo. I managed to complete an art history lesson by Simply Charlotte Mason on Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine with the children laying on couches.

I had this frame in my closet with a print in it that I didn’t want up in the house anymore. It’s working great for the Simply Charlotte Mason art study.

My husband and I made bean and rice burritos for dinner. We finished “Carry On, Mr. Bowditch” by Jean Lee Latham just in the nick of time before it was due on the library’s free app. Whew. Bedtime with Robitussin, Vic’s Vapor Rub, and humidifiers. I’m on track with my Bible reading plan.

I’m reading the @YouVersion plan ‘BibleProject | New Testament In One Year’. Check it out here

Tuesday:

Two out of three children were feeling well enough to do some schoolwork this morning. We made more tea for everyone. The internet went out. Apparently, some construction crew accidentally cut the main line. No TV today. No internet based school (Math & Spanish). We listened to a bit of “Beverly, Right Here” by Kate DiCamillo and did a lesson in Gather ‘Round: Human Body – Vision. We had pasta and bread and salad for diner. We ended the evening with our normal family read aloud time. We started 2 new books: “The Return of the Indian” by Lynne Reid Banks as an audiobook on the library’s free app and “Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse” by Catherine Reef as a read-aloud. The picture book tonight was “A Sick Day for Amos McGee” by Philip and Erin Stead.

My hubs and I have been watching “The Big Bang Theory” after the kiddos go to bed. —- And then our oldest got up late and cough vomited before he finally went to sleep.

Wednesday:

The two younger kiddos woke up at normal time. They started right away in making a scavenger hunt for their big brother’s birthday gifts. They will make up and hide clues and then hide his presents and give him the first clue to find them.

Everyone feels better today! Finally! The day was wonderfully rainy and we are so grateful for the moisture.

I washed all of K’s bedclothes and all the bath towels and shower curtain liners. I made sure everyone had a cup of tea. I even managed to do a little cooking/baking today.

Everyone was feeling well enough to complete their regular schoolwork today! We did Bible together and completed half of a lesson in The Good and the Beautiful: Marine Biology. We made homemade hot chocolate with milk and melted Hersheys bars. My hubs and B ran an afternoon errand while K, S, and I watched another episode of LEGO Masters. We ended the evening with read aloud time.

Thursday:

Our oldest is 15-years-old today! We had planned to travel to see friends and family for his birthday weekend but had to cancel due to our illness. Plan B. Stay home. No school today! In our homeschool we take birthdays off!

We got a little light snow today. K made deviled eggs.

My husband and I finished booking our summer camping excursions. We’re going to be staying closer to home this year. Last year, we did a lot of long road-trips and plumb wore ourselves out. Obvi I’ll be posting about all that in the coming months, so get ready for a few camping posts this summer! I finished my current grown-up book, “The Whole-Brain Child” by Daniel Siegel and Tina Bryson – so look for a post about that sometime soon! I washed all S’s bedclothes and cleaned the bathrooms.

Birthday dinner: Chicken white bean chili, salad, French bread, root beer – poor kid said he wasn’t feeling well enough to have dessert and we’d just do cake/ice cream/candles next weekend instead. I tried hard to convince him otherwise but it was to no avail! 🤷🏻‍♀️

My hubs and B picked up the bday balloons yesterday afternoon! 15!

We ended the evening with a bday movie night and popcorn.

Friday:

Kiddos did regular school today and everyone took a spelling test. We completed lesson #2 in Campfire Curriculum Titanic. We had leftovers for lunch. I did some prep work for lessons #3 and #4 for Titanic. My hubs took S to get the Walmart grocery pick up and we had our tradition of pasta for Sabbath dinner. Yum! We were invited to a friend’s birthday party later this month and it’s a costume party so we all discussed costume ideas over dinner. I did a Google search for easy DIY costumes. You can look forward to a future post about what we decided to wear! I started a new book.

We ended the evening with popcorn and two TV shows: “All Creatures Great and Small” and “Family Matters”.

Saturday:

We concluded our “week of less” with church at home. We watched the final 3 episodes of Drive Thru History: The Gospels. We made pancakes with strawberries for breakfast & turkey bacon sandwiches for lunch. I re-potted the poinsettia that the pastor of our church gave us for Christmas.

I made a gift bag for my friend’s 40th birthday gift. Homemade gift bags are both economical (especially because I used fabric scraps that I had on hand) and good for the planet!

I made this one a few weeks ago for another friend’s birthday.

My hubs seems less stressed after taking the week off of working two jobs. He works very hard to support us and our homeschool. Taking every 7th week off of driving to town for appointments, and working two jobs seems to be a fairly good system so far.

I hope you enjoyed this little peek into our week! 🫣 Next week we’ll be back to normal mild busyness with swimming lessons, dentist appointments, Costco, WINCO, dealing with my glasses Rx, volunteer duties, and traveling out of town.

  1. You know a teenager is definitely sick when that person is too sick to eat birthday dessert. 😦 Good that everyone is feeling better now. I am so impressed with your “week of less” and how you make it work out. I have never thought about making gift bags with fabric! What a great idea. How did you make it? Is it a pattern?

    1. The fabric bags come in handy! I use them to organize socks and undies or keep shoes separated when I pack a bag to travel. My mom has been making them for years. At one point, she had made all reusable gift bags for Christmas! But those were lost in the fire and she hasn’t been inclined to remake them again!

  2. Happy birthday! I’m so glad that you were able to celebrate and I hope the postponed dessert/ cake will be delicious and draws out the birthday celebrations.
I’m glad you are all on the mend. It sounds like it was a rough week for you all. Sickness forces us to slow down and to recuperate.
The poinsettia plant’s stems look healthy and your sewing skills are awesome! Your recipients will be delighted!

    1. Thanks! My mom is planning on attempting to make a “baked Alaska” ice cream cake!
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with the poinsettia in the next year…
The drawstring bags are a fairly simple project. The tutorial says 10 minutes, it takes me about an hour! lol 😂

      1. One hour? It would’ve taken me a few hours and then I’d have given up. You have skills in sewing and crocheting! We love the beanie hats you made for us. Thank you again!!
Yes, keep that poinsettia keep alive till this Christmas. How cool would that be?!
        The cake sounds lovely.
