“Rules are good. Rules help control the fun.” – Monica Geller (“Friends”)

My husband and I are enjoying rewatching one of my all time favorite sitcoms, “Friends”. If I were a “Friends” character, I’d be Monica. A quirky type-A with a touch of mild OCD who loves to cook and more than anything wants to be a wife and mother. We watched an episode where she says the quote that I’m using for the title of this blog and I thought, “that’s so true!”

I way overpacked our calendar in May and we still feel like we’re recovering now (in August). We’re adding a co-op to our homeschool plans this school year (starting in September) and it will be way too easy to overbook with all the fun stuff going on! To help myself “control the fun” I decided to actually write out some rules for not overbooking our family’s planner.

Guidelines for preventing burnout for our family:

  • Top priority: church – our church is a “plant church” and it meets 2x per month on Saturday/Sabbath.
  • Travel to a nearby city no more than 2x per week.
  • One weekend per month: stay at home, no guests & no events.
  • Overnight, out-of-town travel no more than 2x per month.
  • Glamping in Lancelot the trailer no more than once a month.

We hope you are having a wonderful end of summer with just the right amount of adventure!

📆 Do you have any “rules” or “guidelines” that help you govern your social calendar?

  1. That picture is absolutely stunning!!!! The vibrant colors of the clouds the opposite way of the train tracks really pop out. I just starred at it for several moments.

Sounds like you have set up some good rules and plans that will be very beneficial to you and your family. It is easy to try to do everything and end up not fully enjoying them. Good job on the rules.

  2. We don’t have any “rules” that I can think of, but we do guard against being overly busy. If my time is all booked solid, I don’t like it. My Grandma once advised me that if we were having people over, plan nothing else that day. That advice has served me well. Hope you have a wonderful Fall!
