Homeschool Mama Book Club

I just joined a homeschool mama book club and our first book was “The Read Aloud Family” by Sarah Mackenzie.

I thought I’d share my favorite quotes and take aways:

  • She’s got a great list of read-aloud books categorized by age group. There were several suggestions that we haven’t read yet.
  • “[We] lose ourselves in the story and witness firsthand what it looks like to be truly courageous. [We] see that, in no uncertain terms, there can be no courage when there is no adversity, no virtue in staying without the temptation to run away. There can be no honor when there is no opportunity for sin.” (pg. 50)
  • “If you want a child to know the truth, tell him the truth. If you want a child to love the truth, tell him a story.” – Andrew Peterson author of The Winter Saga (pg. 51)
  • “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.” C.S. Lewis (pg. 57)
  • “In literature, perhaps more than any other art form, we are able to get into another man’s shoes.” – Susan Schaeffer Macaulay author of For the Children’s Sake (pg. 76)
  • “We start the book in one place and leave it in quite another – more merciful, more understanding, maybe a little more compassionate than we were before.” (pg. 79)
  • “A good education teaches us – and our children – to love fully and to love well.” (pg. 81)
  • “Food is comfort, and comfort is a wonderful thing to associate with read-aloud time.” (pg. 103)

This was a great book on the topic of reading aloud with your children. We have been reading aloud as a family since my oldest was born, 14 years. A few of our family’s personal favorite read-alouds/listen-alouds are:

  • The Phantom Tollbooth
  • Holes
  • The Chronicles of Narnia
  • How To Train Your Dragon
  • Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
  • Pablo and Birdy
  • The Trumpet of the Swan
  • Charlotte’s Web
  • The Losers Club
  • The Hobbit
  • Because of Winn-Dixie
  • A Little Princess
  • The One and Only Ivan
  • Peter Pan

📚 What’s on your summer reading list?

  1. Love it! I’ve read her book and frequently enjoy her podcast! I tried out the membership for a year but we were too busy to implement anything except Christmas. We love books!
