How to Create a Unit Study About Any Topic – 12 Easy Steps

We do a lot of literature based unit studies in our homeschool. Oftentimes, I post our unit studies here on my blog to share the ideas and resources I find with other homeschoolers. Here’s how you can create a unit study for your homeschool on any topic.

  • Pick a topic*
  • Look through your collection of books and games and find all the things you already have to coordinate with the topic
  • Search the library card catalog for the topic and check out lots of books and movies that look good (you don’t have to use all/any of them)
  • See if there are any nearby destinations you can visit that tie in (museums, parks, art galleries, zoos, aquariums, etc.)
  • If you go on a coordinating field trip, pick up a postcard for your child to write on and send to a loved one
  • While you read the books, be on the lookout for other materials referenced such as other books, music, movies, websites, etc.
  • While you read the books be on the lookout for a fun snack idea! Find a recipe online if needed.
  • Do a google search for “your topic” + art projects for kids
  • Do a google search for “your topic” + documentaries
  • While you read the books, be on the lookout for activities that the characters do that you can replicate
  • While you read the books, look up the definition of any new vocabulary words
  • While you read the books, find a great quote for your children to copy in their best handwriting
  • Have fun learning about your topic with your children!

*I choose topics that my children have expressed an interest in, or that I have an interest in, or that I noticed referenced in a book or movie, or something that I found at a thrift store, or something one of my friends mentioned, or something to do with local history, or something that has to do with somewhere we are going to travel, etc!

🌻 Happy homeschooling friends!
