Spring Semester Thrift Haul

There’s nothing like retail therapy, am I right friends?

I just had to show you my most recent thrifting haul from Deseret Industries. I hope to inspire you to check out a thrift store near you and see what homeschooling treasures you find!

Games ($2 each)

I had this same version of outburst Junior when I was a kid. The travel outburst is going in the RV. I’ve never heard of the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” board game, but how could I resist a game based on a book that we recently read? The coat of many colors game was a “must buy” because Bible games are not super easy to find, and it was brand new!

Chapter Books (.75 – $1 each)

These books we’re all from my “wish list“, except the 2 books about Pocahontas and the Clementine book. I got the books about Pocahontas because I really like Pocahontas! I’m still trying to decide if I like a Clementine books or not… if you have ever read them please let me know what you thought of them in the comments at the end of this post.

Floating Wall Shelves Set ($10)

This set of three floating shelves is going to go in my youngest son‘s bedroom to house Lego creations and knickknacks. Hopefully, it can help keep a few more things off the floor…

Picture Books (.50-$1 each)

“Saturdays are Special” because we celebrate our Sabbath on Saturdays. “Yellowstone and Grand Teton Coloring Book” because we have RV reservations at Yellowstone in May and Tetons in June. “Anna’s Garden Songs” because I’m always on the lookout for new poetry books. “Pirates 12 Days of Christmas” because pirates + Christmas, obviously. “Frog Friends” because the 3D plastic frogs made a clicking sound. I know my three kids are too old for this book but we sometimes have littles over to visit and it is just absolutely adorable! “The Birds of Bethlehem” was on my wishlist, and anything by Tomei dePaola goes into my cart. I feel like I’ve seen “Miss Maple’s Seeds” on several booklists before. Anything Babar goes into the cart and same goes for Curious George.

Yarn ($1 – $3 each)

I’ve been having fun using a circular knitting loom and you can’t beat the price of yarn at the thrift store.

Bible Verse Wall Decor $3

My mom had this exact same piece of art in her home. I think she probably bought it in about 1992, the same year that my parents finished building my childhood home. I can still see it hanging on the wall between my sister’s room and the bathroom that we shared. It’s a nostalgic and sentimental piece for me. I actually bought this on the previous thrifting trip but I didn’t make a post for that one. It’s extra rewarding when you find something you once had and lost.

A and Z Bookends

I’m always in the market for cool bookends. These were originally a silver finish and I spray-painted them a copper color. The Science Comics in between are from Amazon and we’ve been collecting them for the past several years. I highly recommend them. All three of my kids love reading them.

This was a big haul with books, games, crafts, storage, and decor! I’m ready for ya spring semester. Let’s do this!

  2. You make me want to go thrift-ing! Your post reminds me of our annual Book fair. Dan and I volunteer for 2 hours, and we are rewarded with a bag of books each. We pay $5 each and get bigger bags which we chock full! We come home with so many treasures! Lately, I’ve been getting “I Can Read” books (Mostly Mercer Mayer) for my mom who is 99. I have her read them aloud to me, and we both really enjoy it. It is good brain exercise for her. One of my favorite books when my kids were young was “A Chair for My Mother.” And “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” – which you may have mentioned at some point. We also really liked “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.” It was the wolf’s side of the story. 🙂 We will be in Grand Teton/Yellowstone for 2 weeks in August. It will be our first time there. I look forward to your posts about your visit there. Too bad our paths won’t cross. Lastly, I love the artwork you picked up which was like the one your parents had. It’s a treasure in more ways than one!

      What a great idea to share stories with your mom that way. Mercer Mayer is great 👍

      1. We haven’t fully planned the trip back home yet. I have a cousin in Bozeman that I would like to see. It would be a delight to meet you and your family!

      3. I will definitely give you an idea of our schedule once we get a rough idea of it! We have never been and are still trying to figure out what we’re going to do. But we don’t over schedule ourselves, so there may very well be time.

        for my younger ones; my oldest is writing essays on topics that interest him to earn awards for our church scouting type program. No reading curriculum for the older ones just reading books for the library’s “book nerd challenge”; youngest is using Reading Eggs sporadically. I read aloud for about an hour before bed.
        My best friend uses The Good and the Beautiful and I really like anything of theirs that I have used. 😊

      5. I’m glad you found curriculum that works for you guys. It’s a hit or miss with us.
        We use Spelling you See and that’s been helpful for us. It’s self explanatory so I don’t have to get too involved. Because I’m mommy and teacher, the complaining and trying to get out of work are obstacles more than the learning itself.
        We tried Braver Writer last fall but that got thrown out in mid October when Ellis had her hospital stays. I guess you can say we use a mish mash of things. To learn cursive we’re using Handwriting Without Tears.
        Right now kids are trying to log into the Iready test and something is up with it not switching from lesson to test. It’s been a whiny whiny morning and it’s not letting up.
        I hope you’re having a better homeschool day! I’m onto my 3rd cup of coffee already.
