I am not sure what the scientific name for these are, we call them “pokey ball things“. They are seeds that fall from trees.

They do kind of look like little satellites!
We watch the SpaceX launch and docking to the ISS, and the kids loved it!

Those are fruit from sweetgum trees (Liquidambar styraciflua) that are native to the Southeast U.S. but planted as ornamentals all over. Historically, the trees were tapped to make something similar to maple syrup.

Thank you Scott!
My youngest (age 6) keeps saying he wants to tap the tree to make syrup and I keep saying, it’s not that kind of tree. Oof. Guess he was right!
I so appreciate the information and thank you for visiting my blog too!
A PhD in Forestry is amazing! What was your dissertation on?

Have a large Sweetgum tree in my yard. We simply call the seed pods – Sweetgum Balls. Not much fun to step on these barefooted.

They are lovely trees and the balls are lots of fun for my kiddos to collect. I have never stepped on one barefoot but I imagine something akin to legos. Ouch! Thank you for visiting our blog!

People here in Arkansas have colored these balls and hung them on their Christmas Trees.
