Happy Mother’s Day! 🌷

After a lovely traditional Mother’s Day brunch, complete with cinnamon rolls, orange juice and breakfast burritos, we headed to our new house for a family DIY project.

My mind has been a little preoccupied with whitewashing the lava rock fireplace before we put in the new paint and new flooring. Our 2nd house had this exact same lava rock on the fireplace. Though I do love natural rock, this particular rock is pretty dark and dated (1970-something). It’s a lot to look at, there are lots of colors and lots of textures going on.

Plus, it’s one of the first things you see when you walk through the front door.

I was too scared to paint this stuff when we had it in our house 6 years ago. I’m really hoping that a coat of DIY whitewash will tone it down, neutralize it, and lighten that corner of the house; while still maintaining some of the natural stone look. To make the whitewash we’re using a ratio of 1 part water-based primer to 2 parts water. Stay tuned for an upcoming post with photos of the completed project!

This type of Mother’s Day family project is just my cup of tea. I’m happy as a clam at high tide to be working on improving our new home with my husband and kiddos today. It feels good to work together and create something in our new space. I hope it will make it feel more like home when we move in. I love the idea of have a visual reminder of something that we did together to make this old house our new home!

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day! 🌸
