Keeping Sabbath & Our Pancake Recipe

Two years ago I bought my best friend and I matching books titled “940 Saturdays” by Harley Rotbart, MD.  I have subsequently given it to several other friends as baby shower gifts.


The book is a family journal where you can jot down what you did each Saturday.  The “940” is because there are 940 Saturdays between a child’s birth day and the day they turn 18-years-old.  We keep a Seventh-Day Sabbath each Saturday and I just thought the whole concept was perfect for making Sabbath special, especially while the kids are little.  One way we try and make Sabbath special is by having a weekly tradition of making pancakes on Sabbath morning before Sabbath School and Church.  I got this idea from my favorite Uncle W. and Aunt P.  Whenever we visited their house growing up we could count on Aunt P.’s famous pancakes and fresh blueberry sauce if we were lucky enough to stay through Sun morning.  Their family had her famous pancakes and blueberry sauce every single Sunday!  My family recipe and my husband’s modified version are both listed below.  Enjoy! & Shabbat Shalom (may your day of rest restore you to wholeness)!

Sahly family recipe for pancakes:
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
Mix together the dry ingredients and then beat the following wet ingredients together in a separate container.
1 cup milk (we used 2% growing up but now I use Kirkland Organic Vanilla Soymilk)
1 egg
2 TBS vegetable oil
2 TBS lemon juice
Beat well and then add to dry ingredients stir until mixed well but don’t overdo it.  Fry on hot skillet flipping once golden brown.

For extra special occasions I love adding chocolate chips to the pancakes as the first side cooks on the skillet drop the chocolate chips one at a time onto the pancake, then flip and continue cooking as normal.

The Weesner family recipe for pancakes (adapted from Sahly family recipe by my husband)

Dry Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup white flour
  • 1/2 cup wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup ninja-shredded oatmeal (or blend the oatmeal in a vitamix or a blender Eric just wanted the word “Ninja” in the recipe)
  • 2 tbsp flax seed
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • Dash of nutmeg

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 4 oz orange juice
  • 2 oz vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • Drop of vanilla
